FAQ: The Basics of Supercharger Kits
What is a Supercharger?
A supercharger is a device that forces air into the engine via a series of pulleys driven off the factory engine crank. These pulleys power a secondary air pump of sorts that compresses the air before it enters the engines intake manifold. This creates a pressure called "boost" which is force fed into the engine. The additional air intake allows for more power to be produced. There are different names for different types of superchargers such as twin screw, positive displacement, centrifugal. While they all have different advantages and disadvantages, the end result of compressing the air to increase the volume of air entering the engine is the same.
How Does It Work?
To add more power to your engine, a supercharger essentially forces more air into the combustion chamber. This allows more fuel to be added, which results in a larger explosion and more horsepower.
Is a Supercharger the same as a Turbocharger?
While superchargers and turbochargers accomplish the same goal, which is to make your car go faster, the difference between the two is their power source. Turbochargers are powered by the exhaust gases. Superchargers are powered by the engine's crankshaft with a belt-drive or chain-drive. This difference in power source is felt when driving the car. A turbocharged car does not have all of its potential power available until it revs high enough to create boost. This is commonly referred to as "turbo lag." A supercharger on the other hand, does not suffer from any lag in response time of the power. The power is available consistently across the entire power band of the engine, making it much more responsive than a turbocharged car.
How Much Power Will I Gain From A Supercharger?
This depends on the kit that you purchase as well as the vehicle application that it is going onto. Supercharger kits that Stillen sells can increase the power output of an engine from anywhere between 50 to 300 horsepower, depending on the engine. Supercharger kits often have room to make extra power but are limited due to the strength of the stock engine. Making too much power will increase the risk of premature wear and even failure of stock engines. But if an engine is built to handle the extra stress, the power gains can be endless!
Who Makes Supercharger Kits?
Many aftermarket part and performance part manufacturers make superchargers. However, we only carry the best, most well respected names in the industry. These names include STILLEN superchargers, Edelbrock superchargers, Magnuson superchargers and Whipple Superchargers.

Which One Is Right For Me?
When it comes to choosing a supercharger, the main thing you want to look at is the power you will be getting for the kit, if a warranty is available, and if the kit is CARB certified. CARB certified will allow you to run the kit legally in states where smog laws are present. Stillen only works with companies that have an outstanding reputation for quality products to ensure customer satisfaction.
