Forced induction is the great equalizer when it comes to power adding. The greatest possible gains come from the addition of boost pressure to an otherwise naturally-aspirated engine. Superchargers deliver this boost pressure with daily-driven reliability. Two typical supercharger designs include the Roots-type blower and the centrifugal supercharger. The Roots-type supercharger is also referred to as a “positive displacement” supercharger, whose characteristic whine is paired with near instantaneous boost pressure and a steep torque and horsepower curve that levels off and then drops before reaching redline. By comparison, the centrifugal supercharger delivers a linear output curve that builds up as engine speed increases. This supercharger offers the potential for greater peak power.
